As more sites get involved in reintroduction, the variations in monitoring seem to become greater and I have less confidence in the estimates. At the same time, it is becoming more important to have reliable estimates because a strategy for down-listing state by state is being developed. We will be discussing this at the annual BFF Conservation Subcommittee Meeting later this week. There is a decent summary of BFF status in the most recent symposium proceedings (available at http://www.fort.usgs.gov/products/publications/21605/21605.pdf), but I think there are probably >1000 ferrets in the wild now (just after breeding season).Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8527944689184796366.post-76136461980453806912008-02-03T10:25:00.000-08:002008-02-03T10:25:00.000-08:00Zhakee, According to Wikipedia the wild population...Zhakee, According to Wikipedia the wild population was "well over 600" in 2007.

John, What a small world. I tracked a bunch of the Siberian Polecats in Wyoming so many years ago with a great crew of fellow technicians and researchers. I think I even have a picture of me with Robo in the Defenders of Wildlife Magazine from about that time.
